Songs From the Vaults on Myspace Jukebox

Over the coming weeks, we'll be featuring an old song per week on our myspace jukebox. We're pulling them from albums and recordings dating back to the band's early days. Alright, so I thought I might give all of you listeners a bit of backround into this week's ghost from albums past. The song Devil's Ends goes way back to c1996. We wore very skinny trousers, mandatory three-button blazers, never missed an episode of the Oasis vs. Blur saga and split "pitchers" (as in - "do you wanna go get a pitcher?") of beer every Wednesday night at Angel's bar in Montreal. Our friend DJ Toma would spin all of our favourites from the British Isles and we would bask in the glow of our imaginary 1960's, Mod-esque fantasy world which seemed a damned sight better than our actual, Kraft Dinner, class-skipping University one. The Northstar lineup consisted of James Hall (bass of course), Eric Fares (on the ivories), Ivan Michael Juretic (founding father, drummer, heart and soul of the band) and George Donoso (you can hear his angelic harmonies throughout the recordings, and now his beating of the drums for the Dears). Our high-school friend, Kevin McLeod, eater of sandwhiches, prog-rock aficionado and music student at Concordia, got us some studio time at the concert hall and so we moved in all of our gear (Mexican Telecasters, mismatched drums from a variety of kits, Eric's Fender Twin - where did he get the money for that thing? - faulty patch cords and a tupperware of sandwiches for Kevin). The only available timeslot was from 11 P.M. till dawn and we worked through the night, really fired up for the first couple of hours and then cranky and tired for the rest. One particularly memorable night saw Ivan making an emotional exit, vowing never to play again, after an argument over a particular take. We retrieved him from the Loyola High School dance across the street where he had gone to vent his frustrations to then bouncer Joseph Donovan (producer of Chemical City). That was why the band depended on him for its very existence and why, without him, it fell apart. He cared for it like it was his own child and any conflict was personal. We got him back and finished off the sessions as a united force. The song, Devil's Ends, originally found its way onto the four-song Piranha Ep, released in 1997,seven-inch vinyl-only, on Northern Assembly Records (run out of another Ivan's basement in Lac Des Deux Montagnes). We ended up using both it and a song called "Mick n Keef" on The Northstar Ep the following year. Stay tuned next week as we take yet another trip back to the songs that time (almost) forgot...
