The past week has been a mind-bending blur of rock n roll, people, thunderstorms and late-setting suns. It began at the intersection of Bleury and Ste. Catherine in Montreal, where 100 000 people gathered to watch the likes of Elvis Costello, Daniel Lanois, Bedouin Soundclash and Jim Cuddy paying tribute to the great Paul Simon (yours truly chipping in versions of Late In The Evening and You Can Call Me Al, while wearing a blindingly colorful African shirt which I had been saving in my closet for a special occasion). Then it was on to Victoria, B.C. for the Folk Festival where we played in front of one of the best, most energetic crowds we've ever seen. And this despite the fact that the smoke machine got jammed and kept sending out waves of fog (known to the Knights of the Round Table as the "Dragon's Breath") into their eyes. The sky was clear, the moon was high and so were a few of our loyal fans. Jets Overhead opened the show with a great set in front of their hometown crowd and had them all fired-up when we took the stage. The Victorians sang and danced in a way unbefitting of ladies and gentlemen and it was great to behold. We then moved-on to Kelowna and played on the shores of Lake Okanagan. By Sunday we had reached the Calgary Stampede, chased by a hailstorm which could have derailed the whole show but which, mercifully, cleared-off in time for the first song. Maybe we've atoned for some of our sins of the past (not all, but enough to balance out the books), but this was a really good gig. Next night was the Ottawa Bluesfest and we found ourselves back in the East. The Stills and Matt Mays and El Torpedo were on the bill so it was bound to be a night of music people wouldn't soon forget. There was a great sense of comraderie surrounding the whole night - the Stills had us out as guest latino-esque percussionists and Matt joined us onstage to sing Uprising Down Under. That was when the rain hit and to the crowd's credit, no one budged (well, maybe a couple but who's counting) - it actually seemed as though the energy level went up a few notches. All in all, it has been a very memorable week for us. All of the shows now blending into one big reason to keep it going...
